Health Costs Related to Plastic Chemicals Reach $249 Billion
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are commonly found in plastics and can disrupt the body’s hormone systems, contributing to cancer, diabetes, reproductive disorders, and other health issues. According to recent research, U.S. health costs related to EDCs reached nearly $250 billion in 2018.
“Our study found plastics contribute substantially to disease and associated social costs in the U.S., about $250 billion in 2018 alone,” said Leonardo Trasande, MD, study author. “The diseases due to plastics run the entire life course from preterm birth to obesity, heart disease and cancers.”
To estimate the impact of these specific plastic chemicals, researchers analyzed existing studies on EDCs and identified the number of diseases/disabilities attributed to them. They combined this data with cost estimates to reach a total of $226 billion-$289 billion (average $249 billion) in ”plastic-attributable disease burden” for the year 2018.
Much of the estimated cost burden came from polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) exposure, which is associated with cancer and other diseases. Phthalate and poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure were also high on the health cost list.
MIND, DASH Diets Make Top 3 List for Healthiest Diets in 2024
The Mediterranean diet tops the list of best diets for overall health and heart health for the 7th year in a row, according to a panel of leading medical and nutrition experts. The DASH diet ranked second-best for both overall and heart health, while the MIND diet ranked third-best overall for 2024.
The Mediterranean diet – which is often considered more of a lifestyle – focuses on plant-based foods, nuts, whole grains, and healthy fats as well as avoiding too much saturated fat or sugar. Studies have long linked it to a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and more.
The DASH diet (short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) emphasizes eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts as well as lowering sodium intake to benefit heart health. It has been linked in research to better blood pressure levels and lower triglyceride levels.
The MIND diet is actually a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets with a specific emphasis on brain health. Dark leafy greens are a staple of the MIND diet, which has shown potential to slow cognitive decline and lower Alzheimer’s risk by up to 53%. 11 Amazing Health & Skin Benefits of Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a powerful plant compound and antioxidant found in grapes, red wine, cocoa, and certain berries. Studies have shown that resveratrol may help lower both total and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels and possibly blood pressure as well. It has also shown neuroprotective properties and may help slow age-related cognitive decline. Resveratrol could even help fight cancer, arthritis pain, and obesity and has outstanding properties for skin, potentially stimulating collagen and slowing skin aging at the cellular level. (More)
Short Bursts of “Everyday” Activity Can Slow Bone Loss
Exercise is one way to help protect bone density and health as you age, but according to a recent study, formal exercise isn't the only kind that counts. Older adults who incorporated more moderate- to high-intensity “everyday” activity into their day had less bone density deterioration than those who didn't have as much everyday activity. The authors did note that to make a difference, the activity should be the equivalent of brisk walking or stair climbing. (See ideas for everyday activities that count as exercise below ↓) (More)
Video Gamers At Risk for Irreversible Hearing Loss, Tinnitus
Video games have become popular for all ages with options out there for nearly everyone. While the occasional game likely won't do you any harm, a recent research review did find that more serious gamers could be at risk for irreversible hearing loss and tinnitus because of the volume at which the games are often played. Games played on mobile devices tended to have the lowest sound levels, although using headphones or earbuds can greatly increase the volume. (More)
Cold Water Swimming May Improve Physical, Mental Menopause Symptoms
Swimming in cold water may help ease certain menopause symptoms, including anxiety, mood swings, and hot flashes, a recent study has discovered. This builds on previous research showing that cold water can help improve mood and lower stress with some of the women in the current study reporting that the water had an immediate mood-boosting effect. However, the study did not explore the ideal water temperature for menopause relief, and the authors advise caution for those who may be new to cold water swimming. (More)
9 Key Facts About Cellulitis – A Potentially Dangerous Skin Infection
Cellulitis – not to be confused with cellulite – is a bacterial skin infection that affects over 14 million people in the U.S. every year. The most common symptoms involve skin redness, pain, and warmth that can spread quite rapidly. Cellulitis is often caused by Staph or Strep bacteria, which can enter through any opening in the skin. Though not contagious, cellulitis can become life-threatening if left untreated, so be sure to see a health expert if a skin infection doesn't clear up. (More)

Digestive enzymes are proteins that play a key role in breaking down the food you eat, turning it into substances your digestive tract can absorb. There are 3 main types that each help with a different nutrient – amylase (carbs/starches), protease (proteins), and lipase (fats).
